character information
● name: Otabek Altin
● canon: Yuri!!! on Ice
● canon point: Post Grand Prix Finals
● age: 18, as of October 31, 2016.
● (canon) background: Wiki - he is listed as 19; however, the official site lists him as 18 in current canon.
● abilities: Otabek has zero supernatural capabilities; however, he is a world class Figure Skater and athlete who has stood among the best of the best in the world. He's in great physical shape, with good endurance and stamina as a result of a life dedicated to training. His athleticism allows him to be strong, and produces great balance and reflexes.
Linguistically, he is capable of speaking 3 languages that we are currently aware of. As he is from Kazakhstan, he speaks Kazakh. He can also speak Russian and English - due to his years training abroad in Russia, US, and Canada (and also, this is suggested in his ability to converse with the other skaters - even in the limited amount that he actually talks).
Also, he is a DJ. His popularity/skill level is unknown. This combined with his ability to perform means he has a good sense of music and rhythm, despite the difficulty he is seen to have actually doing ballet (and presumably most dance) off of the ice.
● strengths:
Anyone, including his competitors, would tell you that Otabek is an extremely determined, driven, and hard working individual. He states that he had less resources than other skaters, and it certainly takes a lot of drive and hard work to get to where he is as a result of having less. He also mentions that it is okay to do things his own way, and that is the only way he'll succeed. He also often talks about bringing the gold back to his home of Kazakhstan.
It also takes someone who is sensible to recognize where his own skills are (and aren't), and overcome them - especially as young as he is! It also shows a lot of awareness of the situation to work in a way that helped him become successful.
Otabek is also a very strong individual. He doesn't succumb to pressure, despite the fact that he mentions that the talent is overwhelming. While some of the other skaters seem to falter when it comes to the pressure in the finals, Otabek doesn't once. He performs flawlessly. He isn't called the Hero of Kazakhstan for being weak!
He is loyal and has a great memory, which are certainly tied together with him. These two facts are proven through his relationship with Yuri. Although Yuri had no memory of knowing him, Otabek remembered details about Yuri (ie: his eyes) and for five years held onto the thought that they could be friends. He seems to strongly value friendship (thus, loyalty), since he went through a lot of effort to simply ask to be friends. Also, his desire to bring the gold back to Kazakhstan shows a strong loyalty towards his home, as well - since by saying so, winning isn't just for him.
● weaknesses:
Otabek comes across as aloof and anti-social. He rejects invitations presented to him by other competitors to participate in social events, such as something as small as dinner with a competitor. He prefers to spend his time alone, and certainly would be described as a loner by others that know him. (Viktor even says that it appears he is not interested in socializing with other skaters). This isn't to say he is unfriendly, but he's very particular about who he interacts with. He is a pretty straightforward guy when he does speak (this isn't often). He just straight up asks Yuri to go places with him, to be his friend, and with the wrong audience, these behaviors can come across as awkward.
He internalizes everything. Quite literally. Otabek does not speak much throughout most of the series. He's not expressive or very talkative. However, when is given the opportunity in the series to have an internal monologue - he really goes at it. He describes his goals and dreams. However...off of the ice he has a resting bitch-face and often looks annoyed/disinterested/bored - even when he's otherwise enthusiastically applauding an engagement, even if that isn't the case. It can be really off-putting to people who don't know him.
Otabek is very shy. This most definitely a contributing factor in his other weaknesses. He's extremely private (to the point where others know nothing about him - and while that's not bad, it shows that he has not built any relationships with others). Also, it took him five years to approach and interact with Yuri. Which certainly shows a lack of confidence and shyness in social interactions.
● skills (optional): athleticism on the ice, DJing~
● housing (optional): As long as it isn't shared - I am fine with anything. He would say private, due to his preference for privacy. I say he probably needs to be in communal so he'll interact with people. ;) And since I can't decide - I'll leave it up to you!

[ The camera comes on and there's silence for a few moments. Otabek looks disinterested, slightly concerned with brows furrowed a little. He's not a fan of posting on social networks. He makes a noise, then gets quiet again. He doesn't sit quietly for too long, as to not make it awkward. ]
I am seeking some advice from someone that is more familiar with the area. As I would like to continue my training, does anyone have a recommended route for running? I would like to stay away from the wall as much as possible.
[ His expression shifts a little, brows furrowing a bit more. ]
Although I have not done much of it, I think am going to add occassional swimming to my training regimen. I understand it would be great for stamina and endurance.
[ That seems to be all he has to say, because without much fanfare, he immediately shuts off the video. No goodbyes. No nothing. ]
● prose/action sample:
This place was nothing like Almaty, his home, or any other place that he had visited and trained. The walls that surrounded the city, seemed to want to provide a sense of security, but instead it gave Otabek a sense of unease. At home, he had traveled and trained in several countries throughout the world. He was able to safely relocate as he saw fit, and had bee relatively unrestricted as long as he had a place to train. Still, despite the feelings he had here, he worked to maintain a level of normalcy.
Having others he knew here did make that a little bit easier. Befriending new people was difficult for him, though. He wanted to figure someone out before approaching them for friendship. Or figure them out as much as he was able to. It was slow going, but that was alright for him. He knew it would happen, even if slowly.
He also found resuming behaviors he had at home helped, and as such he woke up early in the morning, moving about quietly so not to wake or disturb anyone. He slipped on a t-shirt, then his running suit. It was light blue, with yellow details. The colors reminded him of home, and constantly reminded him of why he was doing the things that he did. The shoes came last, before he slipped outside.
The route he took was a particularly easy and short one. It looped around nicely, ad that meant he would run it a few times in order to make up for it's distance. This time also allowed for him to indulge himself in thoughts. He went through ideas for programs he was intending to perform, or songs that he wanted to remix. The run itself went quickly as a result.
Since he didn't have training at the rink today, he opted to go swimming at the nearest pool. Even if he wasn't skating, Otabek never took a day off.
He didn't know how to take a day off.
